Early Beginnings

Growing up as an inner city kid, there wasn’t a lot of homemade bakers around. My father worked the graveyard shift. He would complete his shift at this Plastic manufacturing company at midnight and come straight home. Home is Where my mother always made sure my father’s dinner was in the microwave when he arrived.  My bedroom window was along the back of the house near the door he entered. As soon as I seen those Buick front Lights in my backyard, I popped up out of bed ready to go.

I looked forward to this every Friday!! My father would come in and peek if I am awake. Baby girl are you sleeping? I would answer, no daddy can I go? Before he would say, grab your coat we were off to Freddie’s Donuts. When we arrived you could smell the fresh donuts.  As we enter the bakery, a short bald man wearing a white apron with what I now know was jelly stains greets us and smile. Hey Paully!! How are you? Your usual? My dad replies with “you know it Freddy” and Freddy says ; for the girl? My dad  looks at me & says what will it be??? as I looked around with everything smelling so heavenly, I wanted one of everything!! I said Mr. Freddy,what was recently made fresh? Freddy says ahhhh you are a smart young girl,coming right up! To my surprise this is where I fell in love with powdered red-jelly filled donuts, Yum!

When we returned my mother seen all the white powdered sugar all over me & just how happy visiting this bakery made me. I was extremely excited about fresh baked goods. She vowed that every Sunday we would together make a homemade bake good from scratch. This continued for many years. As I had gotten older now a teenager, I was handed the torch and started baking for family and friends. This included birthday and specialty cakes, cookies, Pies & treats.

Finding the love in baking all things containing sugar, I decided to focus on Specialty Cookies. I have been able to convert many different  and unusual flavors  into a  delicious cookie combination.
